DLK has been engaged with CTE-AECOM in the redesign of the Wabash Avenue Streetscape from
Wacker Drive to Harrison St. in Chicago.
This corridor has long been home to the City’s
jewelry and diamond manufacturers and dealers. In recent years the corridor has taken on
an educational focus with locations of the Art Institute of Chicago, DePaul University,
Roosevelt Universtiy, Columbia College, Robert Morris College, and Harold Washington
College.
In addition, the corridor is one of the more unique corridors in the city with the presence of the CTA elevated structure forming the eastern boundary of Chicago’s “Loop”.
The proposed streetscape design draws upon the strength of architectural elements in the
el structure. New lighting elements – transit trees – were designed to provide street and
sidewalk illumination while also providing support for vertical landscape on cables.
Planters will provide ground plane greenspace and amenities for the new streetscape.
Construction is anticipated to commence in 2006 and be completed in early 2007.
