DLK was commissioned by the Chicago Department of Transportation to
provide architectural and landscape design for the rehabilitation of Wacker Drive,
a historic, two-tiered roadway that serves as a major artery for
Chicago's business district. Working with the Illinois Historic Preservation
Agency, DLK is managing the reattachment of the Drive's historic
limestone and granite façade to a new viaduct structure, and creating a
pedestrian ramp to replace the existing vehicular ramp. DLK
is also designing the streetscape for the Drive. New lighting, planters,
benches, and sidewalks will complement the rehabilitated historical
architecture. A new plaza will contain shade trees, a fountain, a
glass-enclosed kiosk, and a monumental Loredo Taft sculpture.
