In 2000, Hayden Bulin Larson
was engaged by the Village of Skokie to develop landscape architectural
design concepts and construction documents for the renovation of
the existing medians on Main Street in Skokie.
Stretching for nearly 2-1/2 miles and comprising 36 separate
medians, the project extended from McCormick Boulevard to Latrobe
Avenue in the central part of Skokie.
The existing medians were planted with turf and hackberry trees.
The trees ranged in sizes from 3” to 12” caliper and were retained
in the final design of the medians.
This project including the
following:
Preservation of all existing trees and removal of all turf from
the medians.
Decorative pavers were used in the narrow median segments and
nosings.
New concrete carriagewalks on both sides of the planted median
to help protect the plantings.
21 species of perennials, grasses, shrubs and groundcovers to
create an undulating pattern of color, variety and all-season
interest. More than 50,000 plant units were incorporated into
the plantings.
Fully automatic drip irrigation system for 100% of the planted
areas.
