As part of the overall South Lake Shore Drive reconstruction project, Hayden Bulin Larson was charged with developing the aesthetic concepts for the reconstruction of the 31st Street Bridge and the renovation of the Oakwood Boulevard (39th Street) Bridge over Lake Shore Drive. Both bridges were completed in 2003.
The primary features of the new bridges are tall, tapered pylons that create gateways both into the City and into Burnham Park. These pylons are constructed of precast concrete veneer over a structural concrete core and will also act as lighting features with four bracket-mounted globes.
The railings are supported on tapered steel posts. Pedestrian lighting is also incorporated into the railing on tapered precast concrete bases and pole shafts. The abutment and wing walls were divided into grid patterns and formed the background for vines planted at the base of the wall.
