Roosevelt Road Design Guidelines, Chicago
As part of the design and reconstruction of the half-mile-long Roosevelt Road viaduct, DLK was asked to prepare design guidelines for future development on and adjacent to the new bridge. Property owners and community representatives participated in the preparation of the guidelines, which describe how ground-level and bridge-level projects would interact with the highly articulated elements of the reconstructed viaduct. To maintain the rhythm of the bridges' architectural elements, a certain number could be retained in each block while others could be removed to provide access for new developments. Paving and planting materials for new developments were also specified. At the lower level, easily removable precast brick panels were designed for adaptive reuse in areas beneath and adjacent to the bridge.
