The Murray elementary school
renovation allows DLK Civic Design to be part of a unique collaboration
between the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District.
DLK provided architectural and landscape services for this commission,
which included an absolute design to budget requirement.
The
project consists of two additions to the school. The East Addition
will be a 2-story classroom wing with 7 new classrooms, a media
center/library, an art/music room and administrative space. The
West Addition will be a 1 or 2 story multi-purpose use wing that
will function as a lunchroom during school hours and as a recreation
center after school hours.
The landscape design seeks
to take elements from the curriculum and extend them into the
surrounding grounds, thereby encompassing the entire site and
the adjacent park. Standard curriculum at Murray school includes
ongoing studies of butterfly life cycles, family history and genealogy,
as well as last year’s introduction of Japanese as a studied language
option. The design proposes several features to augment the curriculum
and enhance the experiences of the children and faculty. A butterfly
garden allows students to study first hand butterfly life phases
without disrupting the cycle. A Zen Garden anchored by an oak
tree is surrounded by smooth pebbles to simulate a dry riverbed
that can be filled with water. The genealogy unit is supported
by a plant family study area. The tree species of the plant palette
are chosen from various world communities for their proven ability
to survive the unique conditions of the Midwest and as a reflection
of the diverse student population. The dual objectives of the
design are an integration of the CPS and CPD resources and enabling
the learning process to extend beyond the classroom walls.
