Orchard Road Grade Separation, Aurora, Illinois
In 2000, Hayden Bulin Larson was engaged by Bowman, Barrett and Associates and Kane County Department of Transportation to develop a style and motif for a grade separation project in Aurora, Illinois.

This project involved the design of a railroad grade separation between the Burlington Northern Railroad and Orchard Road to eliminate the at-grade crossing at this increasingly busy roadway/railway intersection. In addition, a pedestrian bridge was included parallel to the railroad bridge to provide continuity to a local trail system. The County desired an aesthetic treatment for the structures that was an upgrade from the typical railway structures.

During the design process, HBL introduced a horticulture motif by using the Boston Ivy leaf as a theme. This theme was recreated in large scale using rubber form liners in the concrete formwork to create large, 4-foot square Boston Ivy leaves that were incorporated into the flat expanses of the bridge abutments and piers. In the largest abutment, these leaves were randomly placed across the 90-foot wide concrete face.

The landscape treatment utilized real Boston Ivy planted at the top of the segmental block retaining walls. Over time, these vines will cascade down across the face of the walls.
