Lawrence Avenue Streetscape, Chicago
In 2002, Hayden Bulin Larson was engaged with T.Y. Lin International and the City of Chicago to develop preliminary concepts and final plans for the renovation of the streetscape on Lawrence Avenue between Cicero and Pulaski Avenues.

The project focused on developing neighborhood identity elements to define the streetscape as narrow sidewalks prevented the use of more common streetscape elements along Lawrence Avenue. This area of Chicago is filled with prime examples of the “Chicago Bungalow” style homes. Design elements from these homes were used to develop detailing for identity elements that have been incorporated into the Streetscape. Neighborhood identity was created using vertical identifier pylons, metal lightpole banners and bronze sidewalk medallons.

Sidewalk “bump-outs” were created at the sidestreet intersections where landscaped planters created green space for neighborhood enjoyment.

Design work began in early 2002 and Phase 1 construction was completed in the fall of 2002. Phase 2 construction is anticipated for completion in 2005; Phase 3 construction is slated for 2005-06.
