Irving Park Medians, Chicago
The Irving Park medians include two-and-a-half miles of plantings that meet the client’s need for permanent, low-maintenance plantings that don't interfere with drivers' sightlines and show a variety of colors. To illustrate the progression of colors in the planter throughout the year, DLK developed a seasonal color chart. The chart has become a requirement for any landscape contractor working with the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Through a cooperative effort between DLK and CDOT, DLK was able to use a portion of the planting area to experiment with salt and soil conditions in the medians. Due to the success of DLK’s experiments, CDOT now allows all of its contractors to experiment with planting areas.
