Fort Sheridan Master Redevelopment Plan, Highland Park and Highwood, Illinois
DLK served as the Master Planner and Master Architect for the preservation and adaptive reuse of Fort Sheridan. We assisted the client in identifying the scope of a conceptual plan, analyzing the architectural and landscape resources of the site, and developing a plan to seamlessly integrate new and rehabilitated residential and cultural facilities within the historic fabric.

The Redevelopment Plan covers a gross site area of more than 230 acres, and will result in the creation of a total of 551 housing units. A total of 272 of these units will be in the existing historic buildings, which will be restored and rehabilitated. An additional 279 units will be located in newly constructed single-family, multifamily, and townhouse residences. There will be three non-residential uses within existing historic buildings: a gymnasium for Lake Forest College, a facility for Midwest Young Artists, and a small theater, which has yet to be programmed.

This project represents the first use of a Cultural Resource Management Plan for the preservation of a federally-owned National Historic Landmark District which is being privately redeveloped. The project afforded us an opportunity to work closely with the Joint Planning Commission of the cities of Highland Park and Highwood, and with Lake County, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, the Army Corps of Engineers, and other individuals and groups concerned with the future of this national and regional resource.

This project won the 1998 National Planning Award from the Illinois Chapter of American Planning Association and the 1999 Builder’s Choice National Award for Best Planning.
