City OF Chicago Streetscape Guidelines, Chicago
DLK The City of Chicago refurbishes miles of streetscape every year as part of its ongoing effort to improve the pedestrian environments in the City. In 2003, Hayden Bulin Larson completed a study for the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) to standardize the improvements and publish a “Streetscape Guidelines” document for use throughout the City. This study and the resulting 100+ page document involved establishing standards for streetscape design and construction for CDOT. This involved evaluating and establishing design standards for various categories of city streets and sidewalks, establishment of standards for site furniture, paving, decorative features and landscaping. In addition, the process for developing a new streetscape was outlined for use by the City’s Aldermen and community groups.
