Barrington Streetscape, Barrington, Illinois
In 2000, Hayden Bulin Larson was engaged by the Village of Barrington to develop design plans and construction documents for a new streetscape for its Village Center, the central business district in Barrington. James J. Benes & Company provided electrical engineering services and coordination with IDOT for this project.

The new streetscape is being implemented in stages; Stage 1 concentrated on the 8-block length of Main Street (Lake-Cook Road) between Hough Street and Northwest Highway (Rt. 14). The design of the streetscape incorporates cobblestone-styled unit pavers and concrete sidewalks, new decorative lighting units and street trees. At several key intersections, special spaces were created.

The Veteran’s Memorial Plaza was recreated in an enlarged space and incorporated three flagpoles and memorial plaques from all of the branches of the armed services.

Stages 2 and 3 expanded the treatment into adjacent areas of the Village Center and similar treatments have been implemented into the new Metra train station recently completed south of Stage 1. Stages 4 and 5 are slated for 2005 and 2006 completion dates, respectively.

In 2003, this project was named “Project of the Year” by the American Public Works Association - Chicago Metropolitan Chapter.
