| BOULEVARDS,
Chicago |
 |
| DLK Civic Design was the architectural
subconsultant to HDR Engineering for this Task Order improvements
project for Chicago’s 28-mile historic boulevard system. A four-part
menu of improvements was developed, consisting of existing monument
conservation, new markers at boulevard transitions, map station
kiosks, and a highly repetitive visual “identifier”/sign attached
to existing light poles along the boulevard route to facilitate
wayfinding and recognition of the boulevard system.
Materials for all elements were selected and are vandal-resistant,
particularly for the map station kiosks. All elements were designed
for mass production and as a replaceable “kit of parts”. Primary
material used for the markers, kiosks, and signage include cast
metal and laser cut metal plate, precast concrete, and porcelain
enameled steel.
