| This multi-Phase building program
provides a new Conference Center, Meeting rooms and Office space
for Ball Horticultural Company’s 56 acre World Headquarters located
in West Chicago Illinois USA. Ball is the world’s largest seed company
with operations worldwide. This unique campus, where the company
was founded, is comprised of a series of buildings that were originally
constructed for Greenhouses, Seed Processing and Administration.
Due to the world-wide expansion of the operations since the founding
in 1905, the headquarters required expansion to accommodate the
growth in operations, staff and visiting buyers while accommodating
tours of the demonstration gardens for customers.
The DLK reconstruction program is to be implemented in three phases:
Phase 1 Included the demolition of existing metal buildings and
greenhouses along with extensive utility and infrastructure enhancements.
Phase 2 Included the construction of the 26,500 SF Conference
Center that includes a two story office wing, employee cafeteria
and kitchen/servery along with meeting rooms and expansion of
the seed processing facilities. The unique design extends the
views out of the public areas onto the display gardens while the
glass serpentine exterior façade utilizes solar shades
and deep overhangs to allow clear glazing to flood the interior
with natural light. The dramatic interior volume of the cafeteria
seating area is further illuminated with a large clerestory to
enliven the 200-seat cafeteria eating area.
Phase 3 involved the renovation of 7300 SF of the existing administration
building and lobby, turning the vacated existing Cafeteria/Kitchen
area into offices for advertising department staff. After relocation
of the staff the existing antiquated remote building was demolished
and a link building constructed to provide interior linkage to
what is today 4 separate buildings. The
facility design takes advantage of the site and the adjacent display
gardens that have been visually linked by a new entry plaza and
along with a courtyard garden unify the architecture and site.
DLK reworked the site plan to “green” the parking lots and expand
staff parking, while reworking the site circulation pattern to
remove truck traffic from the front doors. A consolidated shipping
and receiving dock with screened refuse enclosures stream lines
the seed shipping operation with delivery functions into one entry
point. DLK worked with Doug Hoerr and Associates to coordinate
the landscape site design.
