| By designing more than 10 miles of Chicago's landscaped
medians, DLK has helped the city fulfill its goal of creating an Urbs in
Horto, a city in a garden. The Ashland Avenue median project extends almost two miles, from
Addison Avenue northward to the Edgewater neighborhood. The project's raised-wall planter design was originally developed by DLK for the Roosevelt Road median, and has been used as a City
of Chicago standard since.
DLK's approach to median planting design balances a layered and colorful floral
display with sustainability and low maintenance. Ashland Avenue included a layered planting
of shade trees, flowering ornamental trees, low deciduous and evergreen shrubs, perennials, vines and groundcovers,
and colorful annuals. DLK helped the city develop standards for plant survival
in hostile environments like traffic medians, and expanded the palette
of hardy plants.
