ANDERSONVILLE CLARK STREET Streetscape, Chicago
This section of Clark Street forms the spine of a vibrant, pedestrian-orientated commercial and residential district. DLK participated in numerous meetings with stakeholders and the Alderwomen of the 46th and 48th Wards. Of particular concern to the shopkeepers was how to minimize disruptions for customers and residents of the area, requiring a comprehensive staging and traffic maintenance plan. This project was unique in that pedestrian lights were selected in lieu of roadway lights (except at key intersections).

Site furnishings, planters, specialty paving and identifiers were specified for the end block gathering areas and permanent banners were designed for the roadway light poles at key intersections. The stakeholders made the best of the impacts during construction, renaming the annual Swedish-inspired “Midsommerfest” into “Midsummermess”, and coordinated construction themed sales and events.
